In many cases LED are powered by continuous current, with in series resistance Rs for limitino the current to work value, that can be vary from 5-6 mA up to a 20 mA when is required too much luminous power. This value depends also from the wave-lenght of the LED system.
You have to use this also bacause this will assure a long lasting life to the LED. If we didn- t have that resistence, a little increase of the work current will be dimuish the differential resistance of the - light - emitter diode" as we can see in the tension/current graphic. These variations, if enough high, could be cause a negative differential because the progressive diminuishing of LED resisteance will be cause (powering the tension as normal) the increase of the current and a simple Joule effect heating that will burn the LED.
We can evaluate Rs with Ohm law, with If current value, land Vs power tension and the difference of Voltage at work electricity intensity, Vf .
In detail the formula necessary for estimation is:

Vs = 12 volt, Vf = 1,8 volt, I = 20 mA
Rs = (Vs-Vf)/If = (12-1,8)/0.02 = 510hom
LED difference of voltage Vf can be extimated in the datasheet with an electric power of 20 mA in the datasheet.LED will work only on a direst voltage, and a little increase of voltage could damage tham. Differently from the standard alogen or incandescence lamps: it- s enough 10% less for not operating amd 10% more for damaging them.
